Saudi Arabia is a country as large as western Europe that contains a great variety of landscapes across its 13 Provinces. In the center is the Najd, a central plateau that rises from about 1000 metres above sea level where the capital, Riyadh, is located. On the west, all along the Red Sea coast is the Sarawat mountain range that tops 3000 meters of altitude and includes the famous Hijaz mountains where are found the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The Eastern Province that extends along the Persian Gulf is the primary oil-producing region of the country and hosts al-Ahsa, the largest oasis in the world. On the south is the world’s largest continuous sand desert in the south called Al-Rub' al-Khali (the Empty Quarter)
